Our Story

Blood On The Road is riding again for charity from 22nd April to 27th April, 2019. Grand Velo, Ride Maui for GV, is a week-long cycling event in memory of the late George Varkanis (GV). George was a founding member of a charity cycling event with Ian Brady, raising funds for blood cancer patients across Australia. The event was held for five years across various locations including Tasmania, New Zealand and Japan. In 2019 the event will be in Maui, Hawaii with all funds directed to both Rare Cancers Australia and Cancer Council QLD.
Stephen and I have been involved in the charity rides with George and were deeply saddened by George's illness and passing. We have also experienced the tragedy of rare cancers in our relatives. My dedication is to GV and also to my sister Cathy who suffered a short battle with primary peritoneal carcinoma. Stephen is also dedicating his ride to his mother Diana who died nine years ago of Carcinoid tumour.
We do it for the loved one's we've lost and those who are important in our lives. We are pleased that we can use our passion for cycling to raise funds for these charities to improve awareness, support and treatment of Australians with rare and less common cancers.
Thank you so much for your generosity and please follow our ride on Facebook.
